Over 4,500 Kano Residents Displaced, Nine Dead from Rainstorms

The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that severe rainstorms in the state led to the deaths of at least nine individuals and displaced 4,524 others. These incidents occurred across eight local government areas within an eight-month period, from January to August 2026.

According to Isyaku Kubarachi, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, who spoke to The PUNCH in an interview on Thursday, an additional 49 people suffered various injuries during the same timeframe. Kubarachi reiterated, stating, “A total of nine persons lost their lives, 49 were injured and 4,524 others were displaced as a result of windstorm/rainstorm between January and August 2026.”

He further noted that the affected local government areas included Gaya, Ajingi, Rimin Gado, Minjibir, Kabo, Bichi, Shanono, and Kibiya. Kubarachi highlighted that among the six significant disaster types documented in Kano State during the review period, windstorms and rainstorms were responsible for the largest number of victims. He specifically stated, “During the period under review, windstorms and rainstorms accounted for the majority of the affected persons in all six major disasters that happened in the state.”

Providing a detailed breakdown of the casualties per LGA, Kubarachi reported 342 victims in Gaya, 233 in Rimin Gado, 415 in Ajingi, 712 in Minjibir, 102 in Kabo, 775 in Bichi, 530 in Shanono, and 630 in Kibiya. He confirmed that SEMA had concluded its assessments of the affected regions and forwarded comprehensive reports to the Kano State Government, requesting immediate intervention. Kubarachi added, “The agency had compiled comprehensive reports and submitted them to the state government for assistance to victims. As soon as we receive relief materials, they will be distributed to them.”

This update follows recent calls from the Kano State House of Assembly, which, weeks prior, had appealed to the state government to supply relief materials to communities impacted by rainstorms and other natural calamities. The Assembly's resolution stemmed from the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance, introduced by Lawan Shehu, the representative for Bichi Constituency, during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Jibril Falgore on July 29, 2026.
