A tragic incident has occurred in Kaduna State's Askplaye community, where two young individuals lost their lives after drowning in a local river. The deceased have been identified as Suleiman Yakubu, aged 19, and Abubakar Mohammed, 17 years old.

Their drowning is believed to have been a consequence of the severe torrential rainfall that recently impacted various areas of the state. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), specifically its North-West Operations Office in Kaduna, officially confirmed the unfortunate event, noting that the remains of the two victims are yet to be found.

In an update shared on its official Facebook platform, NEMA stated that its North-West Operations Office, working alongside the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other relevant parties, has been conducting ongoing assessments of the flood situation. This follows an intense period of rainfall, which persisted for roughly four continuous days, from Thursday through Monday, affecting several parts of the Kaduna metropolis.

The agency further detailed that Hajia Halima Suleiman, who serves as the Head of Operations, spearheaded a team to visit communities grappling with the flood's aftermath, aiming to determine the full scope and effect of the deluge.

According to NEMA's report, several communities experienced sudden flash floods, which led to roads being completely submerged and, for a period, left some residents stranded within their homes. The widespread flooding also severely hindered movement, compelling inhabitants to traverse the impacted areas with extreme care.

NEMA also confirmed that Hajia Suleiman extended her condolences and offered support to the grieving family of Yakubu during a visit. The agency assured that NEMA, KADSEMA, and other emergency response teams will persist in monitoring the situation and evaluating the requirements of the affected communities to ensure a timely and suitable intervention.
