Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Conservative Party, recently stated that former US President Donald Trump's setback in the American midterm elections was well-deserved. Her criticisms, as reported by The Independent on Saturday, focused on his approach to the Iran conflict, his trade strategies, and his interactions with international partners.

Speaking with Geordie Greig, Editor-in-Chief of The Independent, Badenoch characterized Trump's electoral struggles as “entirely self-inflicted.” She also denounced his political tactics, labeling them “dirty.” During the Tuesday midterm elections, the Democratic Party secured control of both Congressional chambers. This involved gaining at least seven Senate seats and over two dozen House districts, representing a significant reversal for Trump's Republican Party.

When questioned about the former president deserving his defeat, Badenoch responded, “Yeah. He has not been acting in the way that I would consider conservative.” Her critique extended to his imposition of tariffs, his confrontational stance towards Canada and Greenland, and the disagreements he fostered with US allies. She argued these actions were contrary to established conservative tenets of free markets and improved trade. Badenoch queried, “Where is the push for free markets and better trade… rather than protectionism, America first, the squabbling with allies? That’s not what conservatives do.”

Furthermore, Badenoch took issue with Trump's personal attacks on members of the press and political personalities, asserting that his behavior did not meet the expected decorum of a statesman. She remarked, “Trump is very charming in person, but you see the way that he talks about journalists, about individuals. It doesn’t meet the standards a statesman should meet – always wanting to get dirty in terms of insults and so on.” The Conservative leader expressed particular displeasure with Trump's comments concerning British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and labeled his conduct towards Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House as “awful.”

Regarding the conflict with Iran, Badenoch indicated her understanding of Trump’s initial move to initiate military action, which she backed due to worries about Iran's potential acquisition of nuclear weapons. However, she raised concerns about the lack of a defined strategy, posing the question, “We don’t want them getting nuclear weapons. But where’s the plan?”

Badenoch further conveyed that she would have been satisfied if Trump had been defeated by his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in the 2024 presidential election. When asked about her preference between the two candidates, Badenoch responded with, “I would say I like them both equally. Make of that what you will.”

The Conservative Party leader also contended that Trump had wasted the diverse voter base that contributed to his presidential victory, encompassing Latino voters and a higher number of Black voters than any prior Republican nominee. She quoted, “What’s the first thing he does? Tariffs, and then talking about Greenland and Canada. A lot of people were wondering, ‘What are you doing?’” Badenoch's remarks coincide with broader critiques concerning Trump's management of economic and foreign policy, particularly after the Republican Party's setbacks in the midterm elections.

It is important to note that Kemi Badenoch currently serves as the leader of the UK Conservative Party and holds the position of Leader of the Opposition. She assumed the leadership role in November 2024, having emerged victorious over Robert Jenrick in the party's leadership race. Prior to her current role, she held ministerial positions under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, including Business and Trade Secretary, and Minister for Women and Equalities. Born in Wimbledon, London, in 1980, Badenoch, whose full birth name is Olukemi Olufunto Adegoke, is of Nigerian parentage.
