Timi Dakolo Addresses Backlash on Call for Political Unity

Full Story
Nigerian music star, Timi Dakolo, has refuted allegations that his recent appeal to citizens to avoid making enemies over political differences carried any hidden political agenda. Last Thursday, Dakolo had taken to his X platform to urge Nigerians against sacrificing personal relationships due to political disputes. He highlighted that while everyday individuals sever valuable bonds fighting for politicians, the political figures themselves often maintain close friendships behind the scenes.
His stance, however, drew sharp criticism from internet users. Many commenters accused him of making the statement to favour the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and alleged he had already secured singing engagements for the upcoming 2027 election campaign.
In a video message addressing the online uproar, Dakolo clarified that he is not the 'enemy'. He recounted his astonishment at observing politicians who publicly engage in heated exchanges, only to witness them acting cordially, hugging, exchanging pleasantries, and chatting privately. Dakolo asserted that these political figures intentionally sow discord among the populace, manipulating Nigerians into fighting each other instead of uniting to challenge poor governance.
He concluded by reiterating his complete neutrality and lack of affiliation with any political party.
