Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has lauded the serene atmosphere surrounding the ongoing local government elections across the state. These polls are currently taking place in all twenty-one local government areas within Kogi. Speaking on Saturday, moments after casting his ballot at his polling unit in Upogoro, Okene, Governor Ododo extended commendation to President Bola Tinubu for fostering an environment conducive to democratic growth nationwide.
He remarked that “The peaceful peaceful atmosphere surrounding the exercise is a significant departure from the violence and bloodshed that has characterised Local Government elections in the past.” Governor Ododo conveyed his contentment with how the elections were managed, observing that the process felt more like a festive carnival than the apprehension, dread, and devastation often associated with past local government polls in various Nigerian regions. According to him, the tranquil execution of the electoral process underscored the critical role of security in bolstering democracy and empowering citizens to engage in elections free from intimidation.
The Governor stated, “In the past, Local Government elections used to be bloody. But we thank Mr President for giving us that confidence and supporting us to provide security for our people. You can see that Local Government elections are now just like a carnival.” He further asserted that the current peaceful climate served as proof of advancements in tackling security issues, affirming his administration's dedication to safeguarding lives and property, backed by the Federal Government.
Furthermore, Governor Ododo appealed to Nigerians to acknowledge the substantial resources and sacrifices necessary to maintain security, emphasizing that Kogi State's current relative peace stemmed from continuous efforts to combat criminal groups. He noted, “the confidence with which residents and visitors move around the state reflects the importance of security to economic activities, social interaction and democratic participation.”
Ododo, while dismissing social media controversies as distractions, reiterated that his administration's primary focus remained delivering effective governance and guaranteeing the safety and welfare of the populace. He characterized the election as peaceful, free, and transparent, underlining that political opposition, though vital for democracy, must be paired with constructive dialogue and a clear dedication to serving the public.
The Governor then challenged opposition parties to showcase their accomplishments and articulate how their respective political platforms have contributed to Kogi State's development and its citizens' welfare. Expressing strong confidence in the All Progressives Congress (APC), he credited the party's leadership, including President Tinubu, for their backing of Kogi State's developmental and security goals.
Ododo clarified that subsequent to casting his ballot, he entrusted the electoral proceedings to the designated election officials, expressing contentment with both the calm environment and the overall execution of the exercise. He reaffirmed his administration’s gratitude to President Tinubu for the assistance rendered to the state, terming the peaceful election a promising sign for democracy and governance at the grassroots level.
Finally, the Governor urged all political stakeholders and residents to maintain continuous collaboration to ensure the peaceful conduct persists throughout the electoral process, emphasizing that both credible elections and robust security are indispensable for democratic advancement in Kogi State.
