Prof. Pat Utomi Challenges Tinubu: Debate 2027 Rivals or Be Dishonest

Full Story
Renowned political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, has openly dared President Bola Tinubu to engage in a live presidential debate before the 2027 general elections. Utomi asserted that any leader who shies away from public discourse with their political opponents demonstrates a lack of candor towards the Nigerian populace.
Professor Utomi issued this challenge during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time program. He firmly believes that aspiring national leaders must exhibit transparency by directly confronting policy discussions alongside their main contenders.
“If you cannot stand side by side with somebody contesting for the same position and engage in policy discussions, then you are being totally dishonest to the people you are offering to serve,” Utomi stated emphatically. He further added, “If President Tinubu cares about the Nigerian people, he should stand in every state capital and some rural areas and shake hands with the people. The President should stand side by side with major contenders and debate. That is how democracy works.”
Drawing parallels to global democratic practices, Utomi harked back to insights from South Korea's democratic journey. He highlighted how electoral authorities in that nation emphasized public debates across various platforms, including streets, academic institutions, and media, as crucial instruments for fostering accountability.
Expressing his dismay regarding the prevailing political climate in Nigeria, Utomi criticized the pattern of shielding incumbent leaders from public examination. He lamented that it was disheartening to witness democracy regress into a scenario where time is spent “nursing our leaders” while various excuses are presented for their absence from critical public engagements.
