United States President Donald Trump announced on Friday a significant agreement with Russia for a substantial release of diesel fuel. This move involved easing existing war sanctions against Moscow, a strategic decision aimed at lowering energy costs ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Russia has faced numerous sanctions from the US and its allies following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly criticized Trump's action, labeling it "unworthy" and "weak."

This deal surfaces just weeks before crucial US elections, where Trump's Republican Party risks losing its majority in Congress. This vulnerability is largely due to widespread voter frustration over the escalating cost of living. Fuel prices across American gasoline and diesel stations have seen sharp increases since late February. This surge was primarily triggered by US-Israel military actions against Iran, which prompted Tehran to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global energy shipments.

Following discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Trump conveyed on social media that “Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace.” The Kremlin corroborated this, stating Russia “reaffirmed its readiness to supply oil and oil products to the American and world markets.” Trump further detailed that Moscow is slated to deliver 500,000 tons in November, followed by an additional one million tons, with pledges for even larger future shipments. Reacting to the development, President Zelensky informed journalists, saying, “It is certainly not honest, it is certainly unworthy of our partners, and it is, in my view, a weak decision.” To facilitate this, the US Treasury, on Friday, granted a temporary license, allowing Russian diesel to enter international markets until April 2027. Trump reiterated his focus on social media, stating, “Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority.” The broader context remains the ongoing conflict stalemate.

Since late February, the average price of regular gasoline in the US has escalated by over 46 percent, reaching $4.37 per gallon. Diesel prices have seen an even steeper rise, surging by 67 percent to $6.28 per gallon within the same timeframe.

While Trump attributed the spike in fuel prices to Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, the primary cause of global energy supply disruptions has been identified as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. This diesel supply announcement coincided with a meeting in Miami on Friday, where Ukrainian and US negotiators convened for renewed efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. US envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that both parties “held constructive discussions on potential avenues to de-escalate and conclude the war with Russia ahead of winter.”

The Miami talks follow separate visits last month to Moscow and Kyiv by Witkoff, a long-standing associate of Trump, and Jared Kushner, the President’s son-in-law. These diplomatic engagements signify Washington's determination to rekindle negotiations that have so far achieved minimal breakthroughs. As winter draws near, the looming threat of sustained hostilities and assaults on critical infrastructure has intensified the quest for a resolution, especially given the backdrop of lethal Russian aggressions. Just on Thursday, a Russian missile strike on buses in Kramatorsk, a Ukrainian frontline city, resulted in the deaths of 30 individuals.

Trump's consistent endeavors to mediate a peace agreement have repeatedly faltered due to Moscow’s extensive territorial claims. Russia specifically demands full control of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, including territories currently under Kyiv’s command. President Zelensky has firmly refused to cede any Ukrainian-held land, cautioning that such a concession could enable Russia to launch further offensives. Currently, Russia occupies approximately one-fifth of Ukraine's total landmass.

Witkoff disclosed that the Miami deliberations encompassed “security guarantees, as well as longer-term arrangements for Ukraine’s and Europe’s security to prevent future conflicts, and support Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.” High-ranking officials from Britain, France, and Germany participated in these discussions, alongside delegates from NATO and the European Union.
