SDP's Peter Obafemi Declares 2027 Senate Bid for Ekiti North

Full Story
Peter Obafemi, who is the Social Democratic Party (SDP) flagbearer for the Ekiti North Senatorial District, has officially announced his intention to contest the 2027 general elections for a seat in the Senate. Obafemi stated that his pursuit of a senatorial position is driven by a commitment to establish a platform dedicated to fostering national development through comprehensive reforms and significantly enhancing the quality of representation for the residents of Ekiti North.
The businessman and aviation expert, who previously ran as the SDP gubernatorial candidate in the 2026 governorship election, affirmed that his decision to seek a Senate seat underscores his unwavering dedication to public service, irrespective of his past electoral outcomes. Speaking from Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, on Friday, Obafemi released a statement emphasizing that “representation in the Senate is a serious constitutional platform to champion the structural issues that shape our daily lives in line with the ideals of the SDP.”
Among his key legislative priorities, should he be elected, Obafemi highlighted a strong advocacy for the constitutional recognition of traditional institutions. He believes that “such recognition will strengthen the role of traditional rulers in community peace-building and grassroots security.” He appealed to all SDP members and eligible voters within the Ekiti North Senatorial District, which encompasses Ikole, Oye, Ido-Osi, Moba, and Ilejemeje Local Government Areas, to rally support for the party in anticipation of the 2027 polls.
Obafemi further articulated his vision, stating, “Our task is clear – to ensure our district’s voice is heard with dignity and authority in Abuja. I invite the good people of Ekiti North to join me in this work of purposeful representation.” He noted that his extensive career spanning over three decades in international business, aviation, and public advisory roles has provided him with a profound understanding of the economic and social challenges faced by the five local government areas within Ekiti North.
He outlined a comprehensive five-point legislative agenda designed to address these needs: advocating for the devolution of powers, ensuring rigorous fiscal oversight, developing crucial rural infrastructure, promoting youth enterprise, and defining the enhanced role of traditional institutions. Obafemi elaborated on his legislative plans, asserting, “I will support constitutional amendments aimed at decentralising authority and fiscal resources to sub-national and local governments. I will also advocate greater legislative oversight of public finances and promote responsible management of public resources.”
Furthermore, the SDP candidate pledged to champion legislation and secure federal intervention projects specifically targeting the improvement of rural road networks, the establishment of modern agro-processing facilities, and facilitating easier access to capital for farmers and traders across the senatorial district. He also proposed the implementation of structured federal programmes focused on vocational training, fostering technology adoption, and providing enterprise financing as critical measures to combat youth unemployment.
