Makinde Urges Unity, Details Oyo's Progress at Nigeria's 66th Anniversary

Full Story
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, called for a renewed sense of national unity and an appreciation for the sacrifices made by Nigeria's founding fathers. The governor made this appeal during the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan, urging citizens to set aside religious and ethnic differences in the face of ongoing challenges.
Represented by his Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, Governor Makinde delivered a speech centered on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terr*rism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing.” He highlighted that Nigeria's independence in 1960 was a product of the relentless efforts and sacrifices of its pioneers, emphasizing that the freedom enjoyed today stems directly from their labour. This sentiment, he noted, should inspire every Nigerian to embrace responsibility and commit to nation-building.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, in Ibadan, the state capital, Makinde underlined that the anniversary offers a crucial moment for introspection on the difficulties confronting both Nigeria and Oyo State. He observed that independence has equipped Nigerians with the knowledge of self-governance, adhering to democratic principles and the rule of law. The governor stressed that national unity remains paramount for the country's advancement, asserting that Nigeria's rich diversity, with over 250 ethnic groups coexisting, should serve as a wellspring of strength rather than a catalyst for division. He implored citizens to foster a spirit of togetherness.
Governor Makinde stated, “We must appreciate our heroes past for what they did to achieve and attain independence in 1960. Independence was earned through their sacrifices and countless struggles. The freedom we enjoy today is a result of their labour.” He continued, “As we reflect on our nation’s journey since 1960, we must acknowledge the challenges we face in all ramifications. As a state, we also have our own challenges in Oyo State. This day calls for sober reflection on the issues confronting us at both the national and state levels. But we must also appreciate that independence teaches us, at both national and state levels, how to govern ourselves. And we cannot govern ourselves without upholding the rule of law and the tenets of democracy.”
Turning to his administration's accomplishments, the governor reported significant strides across various sectors since 2019, including education, security, sports, economic development, and infrastructure. He extended gratitude to the people of Oyo State for their cooperation and unwavering support, which he credited for the government's ability to meet its objectives.
“Since 2019, when this administration was elected, we have achieved feats and progress in all spheres of life: education, security, sports, business, and infrastructure,” Makinde affirmed. Detailing security efforts, he added, “In terms of security, we have put in place a robust arrangement through the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, which works collaboratively with other security agencies to maintain peace in Oyo.” Regarding infrastructure, he noted, “On infrastructure, we have spread development across the five zones of Oyo State; Oke-Ogun 1 and 2, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibarapa, and Ibadan. People attest to the fact that this administration has done a yeoman’s job in expanding infrastructure: education facilities, road networks, Light Up Oyo State, hospitals, and more.”
Makinde concluded by congratulating the people of Oyo State and all Nigerians on witnessing another Independence Day, urging continued peaceful coexistence for the nation's betterment. The celebration featured a march past, vibrant cultural displays, and a prize presentation ceremony. Notable attendees included the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mohammed Fadeyi; the state Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima; Head of Service, Adenike Fashina; Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke; other Commissioners; Permanent Secretaries; President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Ajeniyi Ajewole; Chairman of All Chairmen, Sikiru Sanda; various service commanders; religious leaders; traditional rulers; and other prominent government officials and dignitaries.
