Cross River: Obi-Kwankwaso Movement Commissions Secretariat, Installs State Executives

In preparation for the upcoming 2027 general elections, the Obi/Kwankwaso Movement officially launched its Cross River State secretariat in Calabar and swore in its new executive members. This new office has been designated as the operational hub for all political endeavours leading up to and following the elections. The OK Movement serves as a key platform, rallying support for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as they look towards the 2027 polls.

Despite a significant downpour on Saturday in Calabar, the inauguration ceremony witnessed a robust attendance, including prominent leaders and stakeholders from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, as well as coordinators representing all 18 local government areas of Cross River State, alongside numerous dedicated supporters. Jackie Wayas, the National Convener for the movement, highlighted that the impressive turnout, even with the inclement weather, underscored the unwavering dedication to the Obi/Kwankwaso presidential bid. She further characterized the opening of the state office as a pivotal moment, marking a fresh trajectory for the residents of Cross River State.

"I extend warm felicitations from His Excellency, Peter Obi, and His Excellency, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso," Wayas declared. "This day signifies the dawn of a new path for the citizens of Cross River State. Regardless of the weather, we are present. Our objective is to reposition Nigeria." Wayas then lauded the commitment of NDC adherents and Kwankwasiyya members, imploring them to go back to their respective polling units and wards to actively mobilize the electorate for the 2027 elections. She emphasized that a stronger vote count for Obi and Kwankwaso would pave the way for the realization of a new Nigeria.

"It is imperative that we return to our wards and polling units to gather support for Peter Obi and Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso," Wayas reiterated. "Every vote cast for them is a vote for a new Nigeria. This task demands diligence and the combined efforts of all committed supporters of the OK Movement."

Delivering his welcome remarks, State Coordinator Egwu Arong explained that the newly opened secretariat would significantly boost the movement's capacity for organization, coordination, record-keeping, and grassroots engagement across all wards and polling units. "This secretariat transcends being just a structure; it is an active operational base for organization, coordination, documentation, and mobilizing at the grassroots level," Arong stated. "From here, the aspirations of Cross River residents will be collected, their issues systematically addressed, and their optimism directed into focused political action to back our Presidential Candidate, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi."

Arong further articulated that the Cross River chapter of the movement would operate on three core principles: ensuring seamless coordination from the state level down to individual polling units; actively mobilizing and engaging youths, women, and those in the informal sector through peaceful means; and upholding strict discipline alongside a strong respect for law and order. He urged members to prioritize voter registration and to "steadfastly support the NDC candidates," expressing confidence that the group would secure Cross River State for the NDC.

Meanwhile, Goddy Akpama, the State Chairman of the NDC, affirmed the party's readiness for the general election. He emphasized that the NDC plans to present trustworthy candidates committed to enhancing Nigeria's economic landscape through well-thought-out reforms and development projects at both state and national tiers. "Nigerians eagerly anticipate effective governance. When a capable government is in power, the populace experiences joy," Akpama observed. "Currently, one can scarcely find a smiling Nigerian on the streets, an indication that the nation is far from its ideal state."

He continued, "Our actions in 2023 will be replicated in 2027, but with a renewed commitment to physically ensure that the votes cast translate into tangible good governance. This is because we are entering the electoral contest with credible candidates poised to revolutionize the nation's economic condition through strategic reforms and robust development initiatives across both state and federal jurisdictions."

Stella Archibong, who served as the NDC's Deputy Governorship Candidate in Cross River, implored party members to convert their passion into actual votes, stressing that the current period demanded decisive action rather than mere rhetoric. "A new Nigeria is achievable. This is not the moment for excessive discussion, but for prioritizing action over words," she declared. "Our ballot is our strength. It is time to exercise our voting rights judiciously. From the presidential seat to the lowest political position, let us all step out and cast our votes entirely for the NDC."

Concluding the event, Cletus Amawu, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, offered a vote of thanks, appreciating both the national and state leadership for the opportunity provided. He pledged unwavering vigilance throughout the electoral process. "We have absorbed the messages from all the speakers," Amawu stated. "However, listening alone is insufficient. We will vote. We will ensure proper counting. And crucially, our votes will be recognized and make a difference."
