Kwankwaso Hits Back at Sheikh Jingir Over Muslim-Muslim Ticket

In a recent interview, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential running mate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, responded to comments made by Islamic cleric Sani Jingir. Jingir had expressed his support for a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2027 presidential election, stating that he was one of those who 'raise the flag of Islam' and calling on people to support the ticket. However, Kwankwaso described President Bola Tinubu as a balanced and fair politician, citing his record of ensuring a Muslim-Christian or Christian-Muslim ticket for governors he supported in Lagos. Kwankwaso also pointed out that Tinubu's deputies during his time as governor of Lagos were all Christians. Furthermore, Kwankwaso noted that Tinubu practices a Muslim-Christian 'ticket' in his personal life, referencing his marriage to First Lady Remi. Jingir's comments had sparked controversy, with some critics arguing that a Muslim-Muslim ticket would be divisive. Kwankwaso's response highlights the ongoing debate over the role of religion in Nigerian politics. As the 2027 election approaches, the issue is likely to remain a contentious one. Jingir had said, 'I am one of those who raise the flag of Islam, I am calling on people to come and let us do Muslim-Muslim again.' He also stated, 'I know this statement pains the unbelievers. I am a Muslim who preaches Islam. If I say Muslim-Muslim, what have I taken away from them?'
