Nigeria's Democracy Faces Challenges Due To Injustice, Says Diri

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has emphasized the need for justice, equity, and fairness in Nigeria's democratic system. According to Diri, the absence of these three pillars has hindered the country's democratic growth. He made this statement while delivering a goodwill message at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue, which was held at the International Conference Centre in Bauchi. Diri pointed out that the lack of fiscal federalism and the rule of law has led to the country's struggling democracy. He used Bayelsa State as an example, highlighting the injustices in resource exploitation, particularly in the oil sector, and the uneven distribution of national revenue. The governor noted that despite generating significant revenue for the country, oil-bearing areas in Bayelsa and the Niger Delta remain underdeveloped. Diri also criticized the current system where resources from his state are shared among other states with more local governments, stating that this is not a true representation of democracy. He drew a connection between resource exploitation and insecurity, citing the example of gold mining in some northern states, which has been followed by increased insecurity. Diri commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for organizing the annual dialogue, which aims to promote democratic culture in the country. He emphasized the importance of practicing federalism in order for democracy to thrive in Nigeria. The event, themed 'Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?', was attended by several dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, and Governor of Bauchi, Senator Bala Mohammed.
