FIFA President Gianni Infantino Faces Call to Resign from Canadian Prime Minister

The FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, has been urged to step down by Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney. This call comes after a contentious proposal to sell a portion of FIFA's commercial interests to private investors was abandoned. The proposed plan had sought to establish a commercial subsidiary, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, to oversee competitions such as the FIFA World Cup. The aim was to generate up to $4.2 billion by selling a 20% stake in this subsidiary, which would have valued the business at around $20 billion. However, the proposal was met with widespread criticism from football governing bodies, including UEFA and CONCACAF. UEFA had even threatened to boycott FIFA competitions if the proposal had gone ahead. Prime Minister Carney expressed his lack of confidence in Infantino's leadership, stating, '[FIFA] have their own procedures for making those determinations but certainly I don't have confidence in Mr. Infantino after this point, given what transpired and given the nature of what transpired.' Carney also highlighted the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, who had served as an adviser to Infantino and had not been consulted on the proposal. 'Carlos Cordeiro is someone I've known for more than three decades,' Carney noted. 'Very high integrity individual and he was [Infantino's] adviser and had expertise in all the aspects of what was proposed and he was not consulted.' The Canadian Prime Minister criticized FIFA's governance, saying, 'This is not how you run any business, a small business, let alone something that is a global responsibility like football.' Following the intense backlash, Infantino announced that FIFA would abandon the proposal. Carney had previously appeared alongside Infantino during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. 'I've run a few organizations in my time,' Carney said. 'Not to disclose to your closest advisers, your chief operating officer, your fellow board members, something of consequence that you're even considering let alone proposing, that should be fatal and you lose confidence in that individual.'
