Kano State Assembly Takes Action Against Three Local Government Chairmen

The Kano State House of Assembly has taken a decisive step against three local government chairmen, suspending them from their duties due to allegations of financial mismanagement, abuse of power, and other administrative irregularities. The affected chairmen are Abubakar Mustapha of Rogo, Bello Dadanya of Bagwai, and Alhassan Salisu of Bebeji. This decision was made after the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, which was presented by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini. According to Hussaini, the committee received several petitions from residents of the affected areas, accusing the chairmen of misappropriating funds, abusing their offices, and breaching the public trust. The committee conducted thorough investigations, including interactive sessions with local government officials and a review of council records. The Assembly's action is in line with the provisions of Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution, which grant state legislatures the power to investigate public institutions and perform oversight functions. Following the adoption of the report, the House directed that its resolution be forwarded to the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for immediate implementation. Additionally, the Assembly ordered the vice chairmen of the affected local governments to take over the administration of their respective councils pending the conclusion of the committee's final investigation. As stated by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Kamaluddeen Shawai, the suspension is a result of the Assembly's commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in the management of local government affairs.
