Ghana Overhauls Presidential Term, Sets New Age Requirement

In a move set to redefine the country's political landscape, Ghana has finalized plans to extend the presidential term from four to five years. This development comes after a committee, established by President John Dramani Mahama to review the constitution, presented its report. The decision aims to enhance the effectiveness of the presidential tenure, providing ample time for governance. According to Justice Minister Dominic Ayine, the government has accepted the recommendation to increase the presidential term. Additionally, the eligibility age for presidential candidates has been lowered to 35 years, as opposed to the committee's initial suggestion of 30 years. The Constitution Review Committee argued that a four-year term often results in a limited period for effective governance, given the time spent on appointments and electioneering. The proposed changes will be subject to a national referendum in 2027, with stringent requirements for voter turnout and approval. This overhaul is expected to have significant implications for Ghana's democratic system, which has been in place since 1992.
