Abia State Finalizes Climate Policy, Poised for Global Funding Access

The Abia State Government has officially completed its Climate Change Policy, a strategic initiative designed to enable the state to secure international climate funding and intensify its efforts in addressing environmental issues. Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, announced this development on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the outcomes of the week's State Executive Council meeting, which was chaired by Governor Alex Otti. According to Kanu, the policy document awaits the Governor’s final approval before it can be implemented.

He explained that this policy would establish a comprehensive framework for tackling climate-related challenges and open doors to global financial resources dedicated to climate action. Kanu stated, “The Abia State Climate Change Policy Document is ready for sign-off by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State. As soon as the Governor signs off on that document and it becomes operational, the international community will begin to take Abia State more seriously in the state’s efforts to combat climate change, particularly with regard to opening up several climate funding opportunities across sectors in the state.”

The Commissioner further highlighted that the policy's implementation is expected to alleviate various environmental problems, including widespread flooding, land erosion, intense heat waves, and food insecurity, while simultaneously fostering sustainable development. He added, “The implementation of the policy will reduce climate issues in Abia State, for example, in such areas as health, flood, erosion, heat waves and decline in food security, among others, while guaranteeing sustainability.”

In related news, Kanu revealed that Governor Otti has instructed the Ministry of Environment to promptly deploy mitigation measures at the Amamba Uzuakoli erosion site in Bende Local Government Area and the Ipupe Ubakala flood site in Umuahia South Local Government Area. He confirmed that the Commissioner for Environment, alongside a team of engineers, has already conducted on-the-spot assessments, and work is underway to initiate erosion and flood control measures to prevent further environmental degradation and safeguard lives and property.

Additionally, Kanu mentioned that the Ministry of Environment has continued its rigorous house-to-house environmental sanitation inspections across all 17 local government areas of the state. He reported that officials visited 103 communities, providing environmental health education, sensitization, and conducting sanitary inspections. Approximately 9,000 premises were inspected for compliance with environmental health standards. About 37,500 abatement notices were issued to properties found to be in violation of environmental health regulations, with 2,500 premises achieving compliance after subsequent inspections. The Commissioner attributed the state's success in environmental sanitation to the consistent enforcement by health officials and increased public cooperation. He concluded, “With these sanitary inspection interventions, Abia State continues to score very highly in environmental cleanliness among the comity of states in the country.”
