US and France Clash at UN Security Council Over Human Rights

A rare diplomatic spat has erupted between the United States and France at the United Nations Security Council. The incident occurred on Monday when the US delegation, led by Dan Negrea, an alternate representative to the General Assembly, walked out of a meeting in protest of comments made by France's ambassador. The French ambassador had compared the US to North Korea and other authoritarian states regarding votes on human rights, sparking a strong reaction from the American delegation. Negrea described the French comments as 'disingenuous grandstanding' and stated that the US would not engage with such 'politicized drivel'. The US had earlier voted against extending the term of Volker Turk as UN high commissioner for human rights, joining countries like North Korea, Russia, and Nicaragua. France's mission to the United Nations in Geneva had posted a statement saying, 'The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore.' The statement further said that the US now stands alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali, and Russia, isolated and no longer listened to by the world. Negrea responded by saying that the US remains the 'beacon of liberty for the world' and would not afford the benefit of listening to France's comments. French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont later responded to the US walkout, saying that France is working at the UN to preserve the institution's independence and capacity to act in service of the charter, human rights, and peace. The diplomatic clash between the two allies has sparked a public war of words, with both sides exchanging strong statements.
