World Bank President Ajay Banga welcomed the appointment, expressing his enthusiasm for working with Miliband to help countries create jobs, mobilize private capital, and deliver opportunities for people. McNeill also expressed her excitement about taking on her new role, stating that she looks forward to working with partners across civil society and the international community to deliver the UK's modern approach to development. The UK's modern approach to development aims to shift its focus from being a donor to an investor, providing greater emphasis on supporting countries in building their own capacity and developing without aid. The approach also prioritizes funding through international organizations, such as the World Bank's International Development Association, which can deliver significant impact. Every £1 invested in IDA unlocks £4, helping to maximize the impact of taxpayer funding. The transition is part of a broader reshuffle in British leadership, following the resignation of Keir Starmer and the appointment of Andy Burnham as the new UK Prime Minister. As part of these changes, Miliband succeeded Yvette Cooper as the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, automatically granting him the ex-officio role of UK Governor to the World Bank.
