The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has criticized the nation's political system, stating that politicians who face corruption allegations often seem to be exonerated once they join the ruling All Progressives Congress. This assertion was made by Obi during an interview on 'Politics Today', a programme aired on Channels Television on Sunday, July 26. He also opined that the country's political parties lack clear ideologies, with politics being driven by personal interests rather than principles. Obi argued, 'In Nigeria today, there is no political party with a clear ideology. If there were, the APC's ideology would be that joining the party absolves one of corruption.' He emphasized the need for competent, committed leaders with integrity and compassion, rather than politicians who switch parties for personal gain. Furthermore, Obi accused the ruling party of deliberately weakening opposition parties, suggesting that the crises affecting parties like the African Democratic Congress and the Labour Party were not coincidental. He pledged that, if elected president, he would protect opposition parties and ensure their freedom to operate without government interference. Obi also downplayed the significance of endorsements from state governors in guaranteeing electoral success, stating that such support does not necessarily reflect the views of the people.
