PDP Crisis: Bode George Cautions Against Judicial, Electoral Interference

The ongoing leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has prompted a stern warning from Chief Olabode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the party. In a statement issued on Tuesday, George condemned recent developments that he believes are part of a larger scheme to destabilize the opposition party through manipulation of the judiciary and misuse of state institutions. The Supreme Court's recent verdict, which nullified the PDP's national convention held in Ibadan, has led to a deepening crisis, with two factions emerging - one led by Turaki and backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and the other linked to the Nyesom Wike-backed faction and recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The faction recognized by INEC has moved ahead with preparations for the 2027 elections, selling nomination forms to aspirants, while the Turaki-led faction maintains its parallel structure, issuing nomination forms despite lacking INEC recognition. George described the unfolding events as an assault on constitutional democracy, stating that the deliberate attempt to weaponize state institutions against opposition parties is undemocratic. He emphasized that leadership is earned through sacrifice, service, loyalty, and commitment, and not by executive fiat or political manipulation. The elder statesman urged the judiciary and INEC to uphold the Constitution and remain guided by established principles of Nigerian law, warning that the misuse of political power often leads to judgment by history. He stressed that no government has the right to determine opposition leadership or candidates, as these decisions belong to parties and voters. George pledged to continue defending democracy through all lawful and constitutional means, stating that power is transient and every abuse of power has an expiry date. The PDP chieftain's statement comes as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections, with several legal battles pending before different courts, the outcome of which will play a significant role in determining the party's future direction and leadership.
