Darline Graham Nordone Appointed to Finish Brother Lindsey Graham's US Senate Term

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has officially named Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late US Senator Lindsey Graham, to temporarily fill his Senate seat. Senator Graham passed away on Saturday after suffering an aortic tear.
Governor McMaster, in announcing Nordone's appointment on Monday, affectionately referred to her as Graham's “darling little sister” who would “finish his work for him now.” Responding to the honour, Nordone expressed her sentiments, stating, “It is such an honour. Lindsey has always been there for me and now I will be there for him.” She further added her conviction that “this is what Lindsey would have wanted and I plan to honour him in this way.”
This decision followed widespread calls from prominent figures, including former President Donald Trump, for Nordone to assume the role as a “tribute” to the senator, who was unmarried and had no children. Graham and Nordone shared an exceptionally close relationship; he legally adopted her after their parents died when they were both young. Governor McMaster underscored this familial bond, remarking, “Lindsey took care of his little sister. It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to finish his work for him now.”
Nordone is expected to serve for the remainder of Graham’s term, which is slated to conclude in 2027. Senator Graham, aged 71, died from an “aortic dissection” attributed to cardiovascular disease, according to preliminary findings from the Washington DC medical examiner. He had already secured the Republican Party’s nomination for re-election in November, and several other Republican candidates have since announced their intentions to vie for his Senate position.
The siblings experienced significant loss early in their lives, with both their mother and father dying within a 15-month period. Graham was 22 and Nordone was 13 at the time. While Nordone lived with other family members, she maintained a strong connection with Graham as he pursued his legal studies and served in the Air Force. In a 2015 interview with the New York Times, Nordone, a mother of two who works assisting people with disabilities in finding employment, described her brother: “He’s kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one.” Graham later adopted her, explaining to journalists that it was to ensure she would receive his military benefits should anything happen to him.
Nordone has been a constant presence by Graham’s side throughout his political career, with Graham even once humorously suggesting she would serve as his first lady if he were ever elected president. She has no prior experience holding public office. Neither Nordone nor Governor McMaster have disclosed whether she intends to campaign for a full six-year Senate term or if her service will be strictly temporary until January 2027.
Elected to the Senate in 2002, Graham was a highly influential voice in Washington on foreign policy matters, frequently advocating for US military interventions abroad. Just before his demise, he had returned from a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, and had spoken with former President Trump the night before his death.
Prior to Graham’s passing, Republicans held a 53-47 majority over Democrats in the Senate. Control of the Senate remains a critical contest for both parties in the upcoming November elections. Graham’s spokesperson indicated that the official death certificate would be pending until all toxicological and microscopic testing was finalised.
The tradition of family members succeeding deceased lawmakers is well-established in the US. Data from the US House of Representatives in 2025 shows that 45 widowed women have directly taken over their late husbands' congressional seats—38 in the House and eight in the Senate.
