The Kwara State wing of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to residents across the state to oppose political godfatherism, the imposition of candidates, and what it terms as ineffective leadership in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

This plea was articulated in a statement released on Saturday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Ibraheem Gbagba. Gbagba stressed that Kwara is currently at a crucial political crossroads, and voters must prioritize attributes like competence, credibility, and integrity over mere political influence.

The NDC noted that for many years, Kwarans have contended with challenges such as poor governance, high unemployment rates, insufficient infrastructure, and limited economic prospects. The party recalled the 2019 “O To Ge” political movement as a clear indication of the populace's yearning for change.

However, the statement highlighted that recent years have demonstrated that a mere change in political parties does not automatically lead to good governance. “For decades, the people of Kwara State have endured poor governance, underdevelopment, unemployment, inadequate infrastructure and a lack of opportunities,” the statement observed. It continued, “In response to these challenges, Kwarans embraced the historic ‘O To Ge’ movement and voted for change, believing that a new administration would bring the desired transformation and prosperity.”

The NDC asserted that the state’s persistent issues demand leaders who have demonstrated competence, strong character, significant capacity, and compassion. It further clarified, “While the change of government represented the people’s desire for a better future, it has become evident that merely changing political parties is not enough.” The party emphasized, “The true solution lies in electing leaders with competence, character, capacity, compassion, and a clear understanding of governance and the needs of the people.”

According to the NDC, Kwara State is now facing another pivotal moment. The Nigeria Democratic Congress positions itself as a credible alternative, offering candidates who possess the necessary experience, integrity, vision, and dedication to advance the state. These candidates, the party noted, emerged through democratic processes and have the strong backing and confidence of their communities.

Ahead of the elections, the NDC called on residents to reject what it described as anti-democratic political practices. “We therefore urge Kwarans to reject godfatherism and political domination, imposition of candidates against the wishes of the people, incompetence and poor leadership, politics of personal interest over public service, and the recycling of failed politicians who have contributed to the challenges facing our state,” the statement read.

The party also maintained that political authority should reside with the electorate, not with a select few. Outlining its vision, the NDC committed to establishing a government focused on youth empowerment, agricultural development, educational advancement, accessible healthcare, business expansion, and transparent management of public funds. “The NDC is determined to build a Kwara State where governance works for everyone; where youths are empowered, farmers are supported, businesses thrive, education is strengthened, healthcare is accessible, and public resources are managed with transparency and accountability,” the statement affirmed.

The party also revealed that it benefits from the support and guidance of prominent national political figures, including Senator Seriake Dickson, Mr. Peter Obi, and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing them as respected democrats dedicated to promoting governance that prioritizes the people.

Finally, the NDC appealed to various segments of society—youths, women, traditional institutions, professionals, artisans, traders, students, and community leaders—across the state to support its candidates in the upcoming 2027 elections. “Let us stand together and support all NDC candidates across the state. Let us move Kwara from unfulfilled promises to sustainable development. Let us reject political criminality, incompetence and anti-people policies. Let us choose credible leadership and a brighter future for generations yet unborn. Kwara must not return to square one. The time for responsible leadership is now,” the statement concluded.
