Tinubu's Economic Adviser Affirms Improved Lives for Nigeria's Poorest

Tope Fasua, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Economic Affairs, has stated that the welfare of Nigeria's less privileged citizens is experiencing daily improvements. This assertion came during an interview with Channels Television, where Fasua defended the Tinubu administration's approach to tackling poverty and managing the national economy.
Fasua articulated that the genuine solution to poverty fundamentally lies at the local government level. He highlighted President Tinubu’s strong advocacy for local government autonomy and the significant increase in funding allocated to state governments. He further pointed out that the era of civil servants being owed salaries for extended periods, such as 18, 12, or even six months, is now a thing of the past. Additionally, pensioners are consistently receiving their entitlements, which Fasua believes is a crucial indicator of progress.
He acknowledged that political opposition might perceive the government's strategy of channeling finances to state and local governments as a political move designed to ensure timely salary payments and provide support to the most vulnerable segments of the population. However, Fasua maintained his conviction, stating, "honestly, for the very poor people in this country, the situation is getting better and perhaps better than it used to be, honestly."
Explaining his position, Fasua emphasized that directing funds to local and state governments is the most effective approach, as the federal government cannot directly disburse money to every individual. He drew parallels with China’s Poverty Eradication Programme, which succeeded by documenting every household. Fasua noted that such a comprehensive documentation effort is beyond the federal government's scope and can only be achieved through the structures of local and state governments.
Concluding his remarks, Fasua expressed confidence that the financial allocations to state and local governments would ultimately secure electoral success for the administration. He unequivocally declared his certainty that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be re-elected in 2027.
