President Bola Tinubu has thrown his weight behind the recent comprehensive changes to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), asserting that these modifications are intended to empower young Nigerians with essential practical competencies, enhance their job prospects, and position them as key contributors to national progress. In a statement shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, President Tinubu characterized the reforms, which received approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, as the most substantial transformation of the NYSC since its inception in 1973.

The President highlighted that this major overhaul delivers on a commitment he made during his inauguration: to generate meaningful opportunities for the nation's youth and ensure their pivotal involvement in his administration's agenda. Tinubu acknowledged that while the NYSC has successfully fostered national cohesion for over five decades, the current realities facing Nigeria necessitate an expanded mandate. He underscored the demographic fact that young people constitute almost 70 percent of the population, labeling them as the engine driving the one-trillion-dollar economy his government is striving to build, rather than a burden needing management.

Consequently, the government is in the process of re-engineering the NYSC, shifting its focus from a mere mobilization exercise to a comprehensive national development platform. This new direction will prioritize skill acquisition, employment readiness, productivity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Under the newly endorsed framework, the NYSC orientation period will be extended to six weeks, structured into three distinct two-week segments. The initial phase will concentrate on civic responsibilities, national values, and leadership development. This will be followed by a second phase dedicated to career guidance, fundamental accounting principles, business planning, financial literacy, and public sector career awareness days. The concluding two weeks will involve specialized training tailored to each corps member's chosen pathway.

Upon registration, participants will be able to select from eleven specialized fields, including Agriculture, Medicine, Education, Tech and Digital, Law, Public Service, Infrastructure, Green Economy, Enterprise, Creative Economy, and Paramilitary and Security Services. Furthermore, the President unveiled new measures aimed at bolstering the security of corps members, stating that deployments to states grappling with security challenges will be strictly governed by thorough risk assessments. Postings in these sensitive regions will prioritize individuals who are indigenes, local residents, graduates from institutions within those states, or those hailing from neighboring states within the same geopolitical zone. To facilitate this, the entire call-up procedure will transition to a fully technology-driven system, ensuring better alignment of primary assignments with individual academic backgrounds and skill sets.

The restructuring also introduces significant alterations to the scheme's governance and traditional practices. The NYSC will now be overseen by a civilian Director-General, supported by three Executive Directors. One of these will be a Security Services Executive Director, drawn from either the military or paramilitary services, tasked with supervising safety operations. All orientation camps nationwide will undergo a national grading and certification process to enforce consistent standards. Additionally, the customary Passing-Out Parade will be replaced by a formal Graduation Ceremony. President Tinubu has already instructed both the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Federal Ministry of Justice to commence the necessary amendments to the NYSC Act, providing immediate legal authority for these changes. As President Tinubu stated on his X account, "On Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973. On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our…"
