Bayelsa State Governor Diri Removes Traditional Ruler Over Insecurity Concerns

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has given his approval for the removal of Chief Wilcox Seiyefa, the paramount ruler of Swali Community, from his position as Ebeniken. This decision was announced by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, during a meeting with stakeholders from Swali Community at the Government House in Yenagoa. The removal is based on the recommendations of a fact-finding committee that investigated allegations of the traditional ruler's involvement in insecurity in the community. The committee's findings indicated that the leadership was weak and failed to manage the situation effectively, leading to the escalation of violence and insecurity. As a result, the Governor has directed the withdrawal of the Staff of Office of the paramount ruler, in line with Section Six of the state's Chieftaincy Law, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining peace, order, and good governance. The process of electing a new paramount ruler is set to commence immediately and must be completed within three months. The Deputy Governor has assured that the government will facilitate the election by setting up an electoral committee. Meanwhile, a five-member electoral committee has been constituted to oversee the election of a new Ebeniken of Swali, headed by High Chief Bertola Perekeme. In a related development, the state government has also set up a seven-man caretaker committee to manage the affairs of Ogboinbiri Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. The committee, chaired by Mr. Monday Edugo, is tasked with restoring lasting peace in the community. The Deputy Governor has urged the people of Ogboinbiri to cooperate with the committee and work towards achieving peace and stability.
