Civilian Leadership Set for NYSC Operations as FEC Approves Reform

Nigeria's Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given its nod to a far-reaching overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. This significant approval marks the initial comprehensive review of the scheme in the 53 years since its inception.
To facilitate these reforms, the FEC has instructed the Attorney-General of the Federation, alongside the Federal Ministry of Youth, to modify the existing NYSC Act and its accompanying regulations. This amendment is crucial to embed the newly sanctioned alterations and ensure the prompt rollout of the revised operational structure.
A central feature of the approved changes mandates that the day-to-day operations of the NYSC will now fall under civilian leadership. Despite this, the military will maintain its vital role in guaranteeing the safety and security of corps members across the nation.
The government stated that these reforms are strategically designed to redefine the NYSC. The objective is to evolve it into an institution primarily focused on skill development, enhancing productivity, and empowering the youth, thereby aligning with the current administration's ambitious target of fostering a $1 trillion Nigerian economy.
