After Accident, Kogi NUJ Calls for Journalists' Insurance Scheme

The Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly urged the state government to put in place a comprehensive insurance program for its members. This appeal follows a recent road traffic incident on Saturday involving journalists from the Correspondents’ Chapel on Obajana Road, as they were returning from an official assignment.
In a statement released on Monday in Lokoja, co-signed by the council’s Chairman, Ademu Haruna, and Secretary, Atuluku Samuel, the union underscored the critical need for insurance coverage, citing the inherent risks associated with the journalism profession. The statement highlighted the indispensable role journalists play in upholding democracy, ensuring accountability, and fostering national development, asserting that media professionals therefore deserve adequate welfare and protection through a structured insurance policy.
The NUJ council implored the state government to establish this extensive insurance scheme for working journalists, emphasizing that such an initiative would significantly boost the morale, dedication, courage, and professionalism of media practitioners as they carry out their constitutional duties.
The statement quoted: “It has become imperative to appeal to the Kogi Government to give serious consideration to insurance cover for practising journalists. No investment is too much when it comes to safeguarding the lives of media professionals who work tirelessly, often under hazardous conditions, to keep society informed.” It further added that "Such a policy would further demonstrate the government’s commitment to the welfare of journalists and strengthen its cordial relationship with the media."
The union expressed gratitude for the survival of the Correspondents’ Chapel members involved in the accident and offered prayers against any future occurrences. Additionally, the council called on relevant authorities to intensify efforts in curbing the activities of heavy-duty truck drivers on Obajana Road, voicing significant concern over the perceived reckless driving habits of some of these drivers.
The statement asserted: “It is important for the appropriate authorities to address the alarming rate of recklessness among some truck drivers. Their disregard for other road users has resulted in avoidable accidents, loss of lives and destruction of property. Strict enforcement of traffic regulations and appropriate sanctions against offenders will go a long way in reducing these incidents.”
Finally, the council extended wishes for a swift recovery to those journalists injured in the mishap and reiterated its unwavering commitment to responsible, ethical, and professional journalism, despite the inherent dangers of the profession.
