African Democratic Congress (ADC) stalwart, Dele Momodu, has projected that the 2027 presidential contest will prove formidable for incumbent President Bola Tinubu. Speaking during an interview with journalist Oseni Rufai on Nevon Media this past Friday, Momodu conveyed his conviction that the ADC’s presidential flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, is poised for victory.

Momodu posited that Atiku holds the potential to overcome both President Tinubu and the Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate, Peter Obi, provided he galvanizes substantial backing across the Northern states while maintaining a competitive edge in the Southern regions. He stated, “As I predicted, Atiku will win the majority of the North, and if he is able to compete favourably in the South, it will be over for President Tinubu and Peter Obi.” He further added that, “Atiku will secure at least 25% of the votes in 26 states while also dominating the North, which is where the bulk of the votes are.”

Referencing Nigeria’s constitutional stipulations for presidential election success, Momodu highlighted the necessity for a candidate to secure the highest overall vote count, alongside a minimum of 25% of the votes in two-thirds of the federation’s states. He expressed certainty that Atiku could fulfil this constitutional requirement by consolidating support in the high-voting Northern states.

“Once you get voluminous votes from the north, it will leave the south limping. That’s why Tinubu is desperate to make sure that they delete some parties. Especially because of Atiku. And the north has already played a strategic thing this time. That move is so strategic that they made sure there is no strong leader competing against Atiku in the north,” Momodu explained. He continued, “Now, Kwankwaso is a running mate. The north will not play second fiddle, just like in the south they are blaming anybody who is competing against Tinubu as a traitor, the same way the north is treating anybody who does not support Atiku as a traitor. So, that’s number one. So, that’s a different scenario from 2023.”

Momodu also asserted Atiku’s capacity to penetrate the Southern electorate, specifically mentioning Osun State. “He (Atiku) will then navigate his way to the south. In the south, there is no way he will not compete well in Osun State. There is no way,” he affirmed. This assertion comes despite repeated public endorsements of President Tinubu by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who belongs to the Accord Party. Momodu, however, maintained that the ultimate decision rests with the people of Osun, not the governor.

These remarks by Momodu emerge as political figures across the nation begin to strategize and position themselves in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. In the preceding 2023 presidential election, President Tinubu emerged victorious with approximately 37 percent of the total votes, largely propelled by strong support from the South-West and significant contributions from other regions.
