Fubara Reiterates Democracy's Role in Nigeria's Unity and Prosperity on June 12

As Nigeria marks its annual Democracy Day on June 12, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed the significance of democracy in the country's pursuit of unity and prosperity. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, Fubara noted that the date represents a milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey, symbolizing the collective struggle and sacrifice of its people for freedom, justice, and representative governance. The governor extended warm felicitations to Nigerians, both at home and abroad, on the occasion, while paying tribute to the heroes and heroines of the democratic struggle, including Chief MKO Abiola and his wife, Kudirat Abiola. Fubara stated, 'June 12 serves as a poignant reminder of the price paid for the democracy we enjoy today, with the sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, and many other patriots laying the foundation for our democratic journey.' He emphasized that despite the challenges and setbacks faced by the country, Nigeria's democratic experiment has continued to evolve over the years. The governor highlighted the importance of democracy in managing the country's diversity, transforming it into a source of national strength. Fubara commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at economic revitalization, strengthening security, and deepening democratic institutions. He reiterated the readiness of Rivers State to partner with the federal government in advancing policies and programmes that improve citizens' lives through infrastructure development, job creation, enhanced security, quality education, healthcare delivery, and good governance. Fubara urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to the Nigerian project and the ideals of democratic governance, emphasizing that democracy must be reflected in daily commitment to accountability, transparency, tolerance, justice, respect for the rule of law, and responsible leadership. He expressed optimism about Nigeria's future, urging citizens to remain united, hopeful, and committed to the values of peace, dialogue, and national development. Democracy Day is observed annually in Nigeria on June 12 to commemorate the country's return to democratic governance and honour the struggles that paved the way for civil rule, officially adopted in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari in recognition of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
