Full Story

A colossal floating landmass, densely covered with trees, made a puzzling appearance in a Canadian reservoir, only to disappear completely a few weeks later, leaving authorities bewildered about its whereabouts.

The unusual spectacle was first reported at British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir, where boaters encountered what seemed to be a fully formed island navigating the waters. This enormous structure was estimated to be roughly the size of two NFL football fields. Satellite imagery captured on July 21 provided confirmation of the bizarre landmass, showing it adrift approximately 60 miles west of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam.

However, by August 5, subsequent satellite images revealed that the island had vanished without a trace. The utility responsible for the reservoir's management is still investigating what precisely happened to it. A spokesperson, speaking to CBC, suggested that the island might not have submerged, but rather could have floated back towards the shoreline or relocated to a more secluded part of the expansive reservoir.

Officials theorize that exceptionally high water levels might have dislodged the island from its original position along the shore, with powerful winds potentially propelling it across the reservoir. This mysterious disappearance means there's a possibility that the massive body of vegetation could still be present somewhere within the reservoir, simply hidden from view. For now, there is no definitive explanation from officials regarding the floating island's ultimate destination, leaving the vast Williston Reservoir as a potential home to a runaway landmass.
