Sinach Wins Copyright Battle as Court Throws Out N5bn Lawsuit Over 'Way Maker' Ownership

In a significant ruling, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has dismissed a N5 billion copyright lawsuit filed against renowned gospel artiste, Sinach. The court, presided over by Justice A. Lewis-Allagoa, has affirmed Sinach as the sole author and copyright owner of the globally acclaimed gospel song, 'Way Maker'. This decision brings to an end the legal tussle over the song's authorship and ownership, which had been ongoing. The lawsuit was filed by Michael Oluwole, the producer of the song, who claimed to be a co-author and co-owner of 'Way Maker'. He had sought a declaration from the court recognizing his co-authorship and co-ownership of the song, as well as an order for the equitable sharing of all fees from licenses and assignments. Furthermore, Oluwole alleged that Sinach had been infringing on his performer's rights, as he was the performer of the accompanying and underlying musical instruments in the sound recording. The plaintiff had asked the court to award him N5 billion in general damages against Sinach and to issue an order of perpetual injunction restraining her. However, the court has now ruled in favor of Sinach, declaring her the sole owner of the song. 'Way Maker' has been a huge success, winning numerous local and international awards. The song's popularity had apparently sparked the authorship and ownership dispute, which has now been resolved in Sinach's favor.
