FIFA President Gianni Infantino Loses UEFA's Confidence Over World Cup Plan

The Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, has openly expressed its lack of trust in the leadership of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This development comes after Infantino's plan to sell stakes of the World Cup to private equity investors was met with widespread opposition, forcing him to abandon the idea. The proposal, which aimed to create a $20 billion company to oversee the World Cup with private investors, drew significant backlash from various quarters, including Europe, North America, and Asia's soccer bodies. In a strong statement, UEFA emphasized the need to hold those responsible for the plan accountable, stating that 'no option should be off the table.' The European soccer governing body, led by Aleksander Čeferin, criticized the secrecy and speed with which the plan was devised, describing it as 'secret schemes on fast-track timescales, cooked up by faceless individuals and of dubious benefit to the game.' UEFA has vowed to work closely with its member associations and other confederations to reflect on the incident and devise a plan to prevent such occurrences in the future. The opposition to Infantino's plan was so strong that UEFA's 55 member nations agreed to boycott the World Cup and all other FIFA competitions. Additionally, North America's CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation also voiced their opposition to the plan. In a significant move, Infantino's senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned and urged other senior FIFA staff to speak out against the plan, saying, 'I cannot stand by while FIFA considers selling a stake in the World Cup.' Hours later, FIFA's chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, revealed that FIFA staff were deceived by Infantino's lack of openness in planning the sale, emphasizing that the project must not continue.
