Nigeria Secures Ninth Spot in All-Time Commonwealth Games Medals

As the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow enter their final stages, Nigeria has maintained its position as one of the competition's most successful nations. With a total of 271 medals, comprising 82 gold, 84 silver, and 105 bronze, Nigeria ranks ninth on the all-time Commonwealth Games medal table. This impressive feat places the country among the top nine nations to have surpassed the 250-medal mark in the history of the Games. Australia leads the all-time standings with a staggering 2,604 medals, including 1,003 gold medals, solidifying its status as the most dominant nation in the Commonwealth Games. England follows closely in second place with 2,322 medals, while Canada occupies the third spot with 1,647 medals. New Zealand, India, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales complete the top eight, with Nigeria being the highest-ranked nation in West Africa and one of only two African countries in the top 10. Kenya is the other African nation in the top 10, ranking 10th with 258 medals, including 91 gold. The historical rankings highlight the dominance of countries with long and consistent participation in the Commonwealth Games, particularly Australia and England, which have collectively won 4,926 medals – more than half of the combined tally of the top 10 nations. Despite the rich history of the multi-sport event, 16 Commonwealth Games Associations have never experienced the joy of reaching the podium. These nations include Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Brunei, Eswatini, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Maldives, Montserrat, Saint Helena, Sierra Leone, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Gabon and Togo, who made their Commonwealth Games debuts in Glasgow after joining the Commonwealth in 2022, are also on the list, along with Rwanda and Tuvalu, who are still searching for their first-ever medal. With medal events still ongoing in Glasgow, some of these nations could yet make history before the curtain falls on the 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games on August 2.
