The Nigerian Army has officially unveiled the newly refurbished headquarters of its 81 Battalion and the Commanding Officer's official residence. These facilities, situated within the Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola Barracks, in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, underwent extensive renovations as part of the Army's ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of its personnel and boosting operational effectiveness.

During the commissioning ceremony held on Wednesday, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2 Division Nigerian Army, emphasized that these projects underscore the Army's dedication to providing a comfortable and efficient environment for its troops. Nnebeife highlighted that this initiative aligns perfectly with the "Soldiers First" policy, a core tenet of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede's command philosophy, which prioritizes the well-being of soldiers and their families. He further stressed the critical role of superior infrastructure in elevating morale, enhancing productivity, and sharpening the combat readiness of military personnel.

The GOC stated, “The projects commissioned today are not merely structural upgrades. They are strategic investments in the operational effectiveness, combat readiness and long-term efficiency of the battalion.” He elaborated that while the upgraded battalion headquarters would streamline command and administrative functions, the improved official residence would ensure greater comfort and welfare for the Commanding Officer and their family. Major General Nnebeife then commended the Chief of Army Staff for consistently implementing welfare-focused interventions across various Army formations and urged the personnel to diligently maintain the new facilities. He also extended praise to Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Agaku, the outgoing Commanding Officer of the battalion, for conceptualizing and successfully executing these vital projects, describing him as a dedicated and professional officer. Nnebeife encouraged other commanders to emulate Agaku’s commitment to improving the welfare of those under their command.

Earlier, Lieutenant Colonel Agaku revealed that the renovation became imperative following a comprehensive assessment of the barracks' facilities shortly after he assumed command on February 7, 2025. He noted, “The review revealed the need to rehabilitate key infrastructure to provide a better environment for officers, soldiers and their families.” Agaku affirmed that the project was deeply rooted in the Army's welfare philosophy, reiterating the belief that “a motivated soldier is a productive soldier.” He detailed the extensive rehabilitation work carried out on the battalion headquarters, which included "reroofing, electrical and plumbing upgrades, office reconfiguration, installation of modern fittings, tiling, painting and environmental improvements." Agaku added, "This project was not just about renovating buildings; it was about restoring pride, boosting morale and creating an atmosphere where personnel can effectively carry out their duties." He confirmed that the work commenced on February 17, 2025, and concluded on May 15, 2026, after stringent supervision and quality control. The Commanding Officer expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, the GOC, officers, soldiers, civilian staff, and other stakeholders for their support in bringing the projects to fruition.

Captain Femi Ajia, the project supervisor and Adjutant of the 81 Battalion, also spoke at the event, affirming that the renovation was executed through meticulous planning, close oversight, and strict adherence to quality standards. Ajia explained that the project’s design aimed to enhance personnel welfare, bolster administrative efficiency, and foster an environment conducive to effective military operations. He concluded, “The successful completion of these projects reflects effective coordination, dedication of personnel and prudent utilisation of available resources.”

The revitalized battalion headquarters now features 12 offices, a conference room, expanded office spaces, furnished workstations, air conditioners, refrigerators, contemporary fittings, and a newly constructed car park. Similarly, the Commanding Officer’s residence received significant upgrades, including enhanced security measures, perimeter fencing, a gatehouse, paved driveways, a garage, guest amenities, bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining area, balconies, and other modern conveniences. The event saw the attendance of several senior military officers, commanders from associated formations and units, personnel of the 81 Battalion, their family members, and other invited guests.
