The United States Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has come out to refute claims that the American military is experiencing a shortage of munitions. Hegseth made this statement on Sunday, describing the reports of a shortage as a 'manufactured story' that the media is trying to peddle. According to him, the US military's stockpiles are not only sufficient but are also being strengthened. This comes after concerns were raised last month about the impact of the Middle East war on US weapons stockpiles, with Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao citing the conflict as a reason for putting a hold on arms sales to Taiwan. Hegseth, however, has downplayed these concerns, stating that the US is producing more munitions than ever before. He also mentioned that the Biden administration had provided hundreds of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, which had been replenished by the current administration. In an April congressional hearing, Hegseth had testified that it could take 'months and years' to replenish the stockpile, but on Sunday, he clarified that his previous statement was speculative and that some munitions take longer to refill than others. The Pentagon recently announced that the cost of the war with Iran has reached nearly $29 billion, with Democrats and critics of the war questioning the accuracy of this figure, suggesting that the true cost could be much higher. Democratic Senator Mark Kelly had warned that the inventories of certain advanced weapons, such as Tomahawk missiles and Patriot interceptors, had been severely depleted and could take years to replenish. Hegseth, however, has dismissed these concerns as 'foolishly and unhelpfully overstated'. The US and Iran have since reached a deal to end the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, and to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz.
