Mexico City World Cup Joy Turns Tragic: Two Lives Lost

Mexico City authorities have confirmed the tragic loss of at least two lives due to suffocation amidst widespread celebrations. The incident occurred as residents marked Mexico's progression to the FIFA World Cup round of 16, with the city government releasing this update in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1.
According to Mexico City's health secretary, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man succumbed to asphyxiation. Their deaths followed the convergence of immense crowds celebrating the national team's decisive 2-0 win against Ecuador. Despite efforts by emergency personnel, both individuals could not be revived.
The unfortunate event unfolded specifically on Hamburgo and Lancaster Streets, a location in close proximity to the iconic Angel of Independence landmark. This area had become a focal point for thousands of football enthusiasts commemorating Mexico's 2-0 triumph over Ecuador during the round of 32 match.
While local media outlets have reported a potential third fatality, official sources have yet to corroborate this claim. Authorities have stated that ongoing investigations are in progress to ascertain all facts surrounding the incident.
These jubilant gatherings were prompted by Mexico's significant achievement: their first World Cup knockout stage victory since 1986, a result that secured their spot in the round of 16 as co-hosts. City government estimates indicate that over one million individuals poured onto the streets of Mexico City, primarily congregating around the revered Angel of Independence monument, to partake in the festivities.
