NAF Fleet Expansion: Tinubu Inducts Five New Aircraft to Combat Insecurity

Full Story
President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to officially commission five advanced helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet this Thursday. This strategic move aims to significantly enhance military operations and combat various security challenges nationwide. The new additions include two Airbus H-125 helicopters and three AW-109 Trekker B models, all manufactured by Italy's Leonardo Helicopters. Details of the induction ceremony were made public by the Nigerian Air Force via a flyer posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday. The event will also include the unveiling of recently completed hangars situated at the Presidential Air Fleet complex in Abuja.
The flyer indicates that President Tinubu will grace the occasion as the special guest of honour, with Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the Chief of the Air Staff, serving as the host for the 10 am event. It was previously reported by PUNCH Online that the Federal Government had already received these five helicopters. Their acquisition forms a crucial part of ongoing initiatives to modernize the Air Force and boost its operational readiness.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the trio of AW-109 Trekker B helicopters landed in Lagos on September 15th, while the pair of H-125 helicopters had been delivered prior to that date.
These three AW-109 aircraft represent a segment of a broader procurement of ten helicopters, with the remaining seven anticipated to arrive by the close of 2026. Air Marshal Aneke previously stated that these new additions would significantly increase the availability of air assets, thereby strengthening the NAF's capacity to address security concerns across various operational zones.
The NAF detailed that the AW-109 Trekker B helicopters are specifically designated to bolster intelligence collection, surveillance activities, provide close air support, undertake armed escort duties, and conduct combat search-and-rescue missions. Meanwhile, the H-125 helicopters are slated to offer versatile light helicopter support for diverse operational needs. This acquisition underscores the Federal Government's commitment to modernizing the Air Force and providing enhanced aerial support to ground forces engaged in operations against terr*rism, kidn*pping, and banditry.
