Senate Demands Swift Security Action Following Deadly Taraba Banditry

Full Story
Nigeria's Senate has urged an immediate and robust security operation in communities bordering Taraba, Plateau, and Bauchi states. This directive follows alarming reports indicating that approximately 80 individuals were tragically killed by armed bandits in Binnari community, situated within Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.
During a Wednesday plenary session, lawmakers called upon security agencies to establish additional operational bases and enhance surveillance efforts in these vulnerable areas. The goal is to prevent further assaults, safeguard residents, and restore calm to the troubled regions. These resolutions stemmed from a motion of urgent national importance presented by Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau. The motion highlighted growing concerns over persistent attacks on rural populations and the escalating casualty figures from recent violence.
Senator Lau voiced profound distress regarding the massacre of unarmed civilians. He warned that the ongoing violence has fueled widespread fear, led to significant displacement, and disrupted the peaceful coexistence within communities. According to Lau, “The continued activities of armed bandits in rural communities undermined the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.”
The Senate cautioned that a failure to decisively tackle these recurring attacks could result in more fatalities, widespread destruction of property, mass displacement, and a worsening humanitarian crisis. They reiterated their plea for security forces to set up more security checkpoints and intensify monitoring in affected localities to deter future attacks and shield vulnerable communities. Lawmakers emphasized that no community should be abandoned to the mercy of criminal elements, urging security agencies to take decisive measures against perpetrators and avert further bloodshed.
Beyond immediate security interventions, the Senate also instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission to promptly deliver relief supplies to communities impacted by the attacks. The legislative body also observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims.
While the Senate cited around 80 fatalities in its call for heightened security, subsequent community reports placed the death toll closer to 50. The attack on Binnari took place on Friday, October 23, shortly after Jumu’ah prayers, around 3 PM. Gunmen reportedly stormed the community, indiscriminately firing shots, looting food items from homes and shops, and setting buildings and motorcycles ablaze, causing widespread panic and devastation.
It is suspected that the assailants crossed into Taraba from neighboring Plateau State, underscoring the precariousness of border communities and the critical need for coordinated security operations across state lines. The Senate’s intervention comes amidst persistent security challenges plaguing parts of the North-East and North-Central, where armed groups continue to menace rural settlements, disrupt livelihoods, and expose residents to displacement and severe humanitarian hardship. The lawmakers’ appeal for more security presence, enhanced surveillance, and emergency aid aims to prevent future incidents and offer immediate support to affected populations.
