Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, the Emir of Argungu, has called on residents of his emirate in Kebbi State to take drastic measures to protect themselves against the rising wave of banditry in the area. In a meeting with district heads, village heads, and ward heads at his palace, the monarch advised the communities to come together to acquire legally approved weapons for self-defence. This move, according to the Emir, would serve as a deterrent to bandits, who often target vulnerable communities. The Emir emphasized that it is the responsibility of the community to defend itself, stressing that the knowledge that a community is capable of defending itself can discourage attacks by armed groups. He quoted, 'If you acquire such weapons legally, make sure the bandits are aware that your community possesses the means to defend itself. This alone can serve as a deterrent and discourage attacks.' The traditional ruler also noted that Islam does not encourage its followers to remain passive in the face of violence and criminality, saying, 'It is not right for a Muslim to remain helpless while criminals kill people, kidnap innocent citizens, and rape our women. Be prepared to defend yourselves, your families, and your communities against any attack.' The Emir, however, made it clear that his call for self-defence should not be misconstrued as a call for vigilantism or lawlessness, emphasizing the need for communities to work within the law. He lamented the vulnerability of many rural communities, which often lack the means to resist bandit attacks, resulting in residents fleeing when attacked. The Emir described the situation as painful, with many innocent citizens losing their lives without resistance. He cautioned residents against ethnic violence, revenge attacks, and extrajudicial killings, warning that 'Every unlawful killing only breeds another cycle of revenge.' The monarch further alleged that although many members of the Lakurawa group had left the area, they had reportedly left behind armed bandits who continue to terrorise communities and maintain links with former collaborators. He called on residents across the Argungu Emirate to cooperate with security agencies, remain vigilant, and uphold the fear of God in their daily activities as efforts continue to address the security challenges facing the region.
