In a dramatic turn of events, protesters in Ibadan, Oyo State, clashed with a security convoy escorting a bullion van on Thursday. The confrontation occurred as the protesters, who were demanding the rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers, attempted to block the path of the bullion van. A video of the incident showed dozens of protesters surrounding the lead security vehicle, chanting and ordering the convoy to turn back. The protesters were heard accusing the government and security agencies of prioritising the protection of wealth over the safety of vulnerable citizens. 'They have enough security to protect money, but they cannot protect children and teachers from kidnappers,' one protester was heard saying. The protests, which have entered their fourth day, are a response to the abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers by gunmen in Oyo State. The abducted victims were taken from three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. The killing of one of the abducted victims, a mathematics teacher identified as Michael Oyedokun, has sparked widespread condemnation and prompted the Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers to declare an indefinite strike. Civil society groups, labour unions, teachers, and community organisations have staged demonstrations across parts of the country, demanding urgent government intervention. Despite assurances from President Bola Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde that efforts are being made to secure the release of the victims, protesters insist that tangible results have yet to be seen. The Christian Association of Nigeria has announced plans to hold a nationwide 'Black Sunday' mourning programme to honour victims of insecurity and demand stronger action against kidnappers and terrorist groups. Protest leaders have vowed to continue the campaign until all abducted pupils and teachers are rescued and reunited with their families.
