The Kano State Government recently launched a significant medical initiative at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, featuring a Saudi-supported specialist outreach. Over a six-day period, 52 individuals benefited from complimentary urological surgical procedures.

This humanitarian program was spearheaded by a cadre of expert doctors from Saudi Arabia, operating under the auspices of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre. Its primary objective was to provide critical surgical care to economically disadvantaged residents unable to access such specialized medical services.

During the closing event held on Friday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed profound appreciation to the Saudi government and the dedicated medical contingent. He lauded their efforts in delivering essential specialized healthcare to Kano's populace. Governor Yusuf highlighted that this marked the fourth instance of a Saudi medical team conducting surgical missions in Kano. He further noted that a previous similar initiative in 2023 saw over 2,300 free eye surgeries successfully carried out within the state.

The governor also recounted the poignant story of conjoined twins from Kano. These twins were transported to Saudi Arabia in 2023 for specialized separation surgery and subsequently spent two years undergoing intensive medical treatment before their return to Kano. He affirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to reinforcing its healthcare collaboration with Saudi Arabia. Additionally, he disclosed that plans were actively being developed to initiate open-heart surgeries within Kano.

Yusuf emphasized that this recent medical intervention underscores the immense benefit of ongoing collaboration between Kano and Saudi Arabia. Such cooperation ensures access to specialized healthcare for residents who would otherwise find such treatments financially out of reach. “Our administration is resolute in its commitment to enhancing our healthcare partnership with Saudi Arabia,” Governor Yusuf reiterated.

In other developments, Nigeria has been granted an additional 10,000 Hajj slots for 2027, bringing its total allocation to 60,000. Furthermore, within a two-month period, Kano authorities apprehended 380 individuals and secured 230 convictions during a drug enforcement operation. Looking ahead to 2027, the Kano governor also appealed to citizens to avoid actions that could disrupt peace.

He further affirmed the state government's dedication to broadening access to specialized medical provisions and fortifying existing healthcare facilities. Governor Yusuf extended his commendation to the management and personnel of AKTH for their unwavering dedication to healthcare service provision. He also pledged the state government's sustained backing for the hospital.

The governor similarly expressed gratitude to the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria and Sheikh Khalil Ahmad, the Saudi Consul General in Kano, acknowledging their pivotal roles in reinforcing the ties between Kano State and Saudi Arabia. He stated that the administration intends to maintain investments in healthcare infrastructure and human capital, aiming to elevate the standard of specialized medical services across the state. “Our government remains steadfast in its resolve to enhance healthcare infrastructure, actively recruit qualified medical staff, and broaden the availability of specialized medical and surgical interventions,” Yusuf declared.

Dr. Ali Ibn Mahfouz, the esteemed urologist leading the Saudi medical team, affirmed that their specialists, possessing extensive experience, successfully performed all necessary procedures with a perfect record of zero complications. “Our team consisted of highly proficient specialists who executed the necessary interventions flawlessly, achieving a remarkable outcome of zero complications across all cases,” Mahfouz elaborated. He concluded that the seamless execution of these medical procedures was a testament to both the profound expertise of the visiting specialists and the invaluable collaboration from the medical staff at AKTH.
