Indian Sons Assault Elderly Parents Over Land Sale for Mother's Treatment

Full Story
In a distressing incident from India's Pune district, an elderly farmer, aged 65, and his ailing wife reportedly suffered a brutal assault on a public thoroughfare. Their two sons are alleged to have attacked them with wooden sticks, sparking an argument over the sale of land owned by their mother, according to police reports released on Wednesday, September 2.
Authorities indicated the confrontation occurred approximately 6 pm on August 30. Tukaram Kisan Raut, the farmer, and his wife, Anjana Raut, were taking a stroll in their village when their sons, Sanjay Raut and Rajendra Raut, reportedly pursued them in a vehicle. The sons are accused of verbally abusing their parents and issuing death threats if the land transaction was not reversed, police confirmed.
A First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Indapur police station, based on the farmer's complaint, detailed the events. The sons reportedly confronted Tukaram, demanding, "Why did you sell the land?" Following this, they proceeded to assault both Tukaram and Anjana using wooden sticks. Tukaram sustained injuries to his back, face, thighs, and left shoulder, while Anjana reportedly received blows to her right wrist and waist.
During the violent encounter, the brothers allegedly insisted their parents reclaim ownership of the sold property. The complaint further cited a threat from one of the sons: "Take back the land you have sold, otherwise we will show you what we are capable of," as documented in the FIR.
Onlookers gathered at the scene and promptly notified law enforcement. Upon the arrival of police officers, Mr. Tukaram and Mrs. Anjana were transported to the Indapur sub-district hospital for medical attention. A video capturing the incident, recorded by local residents, subsequently circulated across social media platforms.
Tukaram informed the police that his two sons reside separately with their respective families in Malwadi No 2, Indapur. Consequently, the police have formally charged the brothers with offences including voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons, intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace, and criminal intimidation.
