What we know: Kogi Tragedy: Four Family Members, Dog Die Mysteriously After Amala Meal

A tragic incident has unfolded in Ihima, located within the Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, where four individuals from the same family are reported to have passed away subsequent to eating a meal of amala. Adding to the distress, the family's pet dog also reportedly succumbed after consuming a portion of the same food.

In response to this unfortunate event, the Kogi State Government has mandated an immediate inquiry to ascertain the precise conditions leading to these fatalities. Kingsley Fanwo, the state's Commissioner for Information and Communications, confirmed this development in a press release issued on Saturday. He stated that Governor Ahmed Ododo had specifically instructed the Commissioner for Health to initiate a thorough investigation into the matter.

Fanwo conveyed the governor's deep apprehension, quoting him as saying, "The Chief Servant is profoundly troubled by this tragic occurrence and has instructed the Commissioner for Health to promptly investigate the conditions leading to these deaths, with specific focus on potential food poisoning or contamination." Governor Ododo further stressed that "The investigation must uncover the facts and determine if the food eaten by the deceased was tainted, or if other medical or environmental elements played a role in their demise. All pertinent samples and available evidence should undergo meticulous examination in line with established public health protocols."

The Commissioner also highlighted the government's concern regarding reports of the family's dog dying after consuming the same food, confirming that this detail would be integral to the ongoing inquiry. He further revealed that Governor Ododo had instructed the Ministry of Health to collaborate with pertinent agencies and stakeholders. This collaboration aims to guarantee a comprehensive investigation and ensure that suitable public health interventions are implemented following the findings.

The commissioner appealed to the public, stating, "The government implores citizens to maintain calm and refrain from premature conclusions regarding the cause of these deaths until the investigation is complete and facts are officially confirmed by the appropriate authorities."

Fanwo concluded by conveying the governor's heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the entire community of Ihima. Governor Ododo offered prayers for divine strength and comfort to help them endure their profound loss.
