US Military Introduces Mandatory Testosterone Checks for Troops Over 30

In a significant move, the US Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has introduced a new policy requiring all military personnel aged 30 and above to undergo annual testosterone screening. This initiative aims to identify and address hormone deficiencies that could potentially impact the health and operational readiness of service members. As part of the routine annual medical examinations, troops in this age group will be tested for testosterone levels, while younger personnel will have the option to request the screening voluntarily. According to Hegseth, the goal of this programme is to ensure that service members maintain optimal testosterone levels, which is crucial for peak physical performance. 'It's a well-established fact that testosterone levels often decline naturally with age,' Hegseth explained in a video message, emphasizing the importance of this initiative. Service members diagnosed with low testosterone will be offered testosterone replacement therapy on a voluntary basis to help them perform at their best. This announcement comes amidst broader changes in the US health policy regarding hormone treatments, including plans to ease restrictions on testosterone replacement therapy. However, the new policy has already sparked criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who argue that it contradicts the administration's ban on transgender military personnel, many of whom rely on hormone therapy. Democratic Congresswoman Summer Lee questioned the consistency of the policy, asking, 'So now you support gender-affirming care?' Senator Tammy Duckworth also criticized the announcement, stating, 'Sounds like gender-affirming care to me.' The testosterone screening programme is expected to become a part of the US military's annual health assessment process, with participation in any hormone replacement treatment remaining voluntary for eligible service members.
