In a bid to combat the recent outbreak of cholera in Borno State, the state's police command has announced its intention to enforce a monthly environmental sanitation exercise. The exercise, scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 7 am to 10 am, aims to promote environmental hygiene and prevent the further spread of the disease. According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, the exercise will be carried out in collaboration with the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency. The police command emphasized that a clean environment is crucial in preventing the spread of cholera and other sanitation-related diseases. As such, residents have been urged to participate actively in the exercise by cleaning their homes, business premises, drainage channels, and surrounding environments. To ensure compliance, police personnel and other stakeholders will be deployed to strategic locations across the state during the sanitation period. The command has advised members of the public to restrict unnecessary movement and cooperate fully with enforcement officers. The directive comes amidst a significant cholera outbreak that has claimed at least 39 lives and recorded over 4,204 cases across seven local governments in the state since early May 2026. The police command has assured residents of its commitment to safeguarding public health and maintaining public order, while calling on all citizens to support government efforts aimed at preventing the further spread of cholera. Residents have also been urged to report emergencies or security concerns through the nearest police station or designated emergency lines.
