El-Rufai's Detention Takes Toll on Health as ICPC Allegedly Denies Medical Care

A spokesperson for the former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has come out to accuse the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of neglecting el-Rufai's health while in their custody. According to Muyiwa Adekeye, el-Rufai has been experiencing severe eye problems, including swollen, reddish, and itchy eyes, but the ICPC has failed to provide him with the necessary medical attention. Despite el-Rufai's repeated complaints and requests to see a doctor, the ICPC has not taken any significant action to address his health concerns. In fact, two ICPC officials did examine el-Rufai's eyes, but no further medical action was taken. Instead, an official named Henry allegedly informed a family member that el-Rufai did not wish to consult a doctor, a claim that was vehemently denied by the family. The former governor's media aide stated that el-Rufai's condition worsened significantly overnight after he was taken to an eye clinic on June 4. His wives, who visited him, found him in great discomfort and were alarmed by the condition of his eyes. It is worth noting that el-Rufai's legal team had previously obtained a court order permitting him access to his personal doctors and medical treatment due to persistent eye-related health issues during his detention. However, the ICPC seems to be ignoring this court ruling, prompting Adekeye to call on the commission to respect human rights and provide el-Rufai with the necessary medical care. As it stands, the ICPC has not responded to these allegations, leaving many to wonder about the commission's commitment to upholding the rights of those in their custody.
