UK Neurosurgeon Faces Suspension Over Misconduct with Female Patient

A renowned neurosurgeon in the UK, Dr. Chirag Patel, has been handed an eight-month suspension by a tribunal due to his misconduct with a vulnerable female patient. The patient, referred to as Patient A, had undergone multiple surgeries performed by Dr. Patel at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Their professional relationship took a turn when Dr. Patel initiated a sexual relationship with Patient A in 2019, following a second surgery. This development led to Dr. Patel prescribing addictive painkillers, including Diazepam, to the patient. By February 2023, the relationship had deteriorated, and Patient A reported the incident to the authorities. The tribunal found Dr. Patel guilty of showing 'a reckless disregard for patient safety' by continuing to prescribe medication without proper medical supervision and failing to inform the patient's GP or update her medical records. Dr. Patel admitted to the sexual relationship and sending explicit images to Patient A. He claimed that his marital difficulties at the time led him to engage in the relationship. However, he expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating that he should have ended the relationship and been honest with his employer. The patient's vulnerability and potential addiction to the prescribed medication were also highlighted during the tribunal. A voicemail from Patient A to Dr. Patel was played, in which she demanded a prescription and threatened to report him to the police. The tribunal concluded that Dr. Patel's actions posed a significant risk to the public, and his suspension was necessary to protect patients from similar misconduct in the future.
