Sowore's Defamation Trial Takes New Turn as Court Orders Defence

In a significant development, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Mohammed Umar, has directed Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, to proceed with his defence in the ongoing trial for alleged criminal defamation against President Bola Tinubu. The court's decision came after it rejected a request by Sowore's counsel, Marshall Abubakar, to adjourn the case until after the court's vacation. The prosecution, led by Akinlolu Kehinde, had applied for the defendant to enter his defence, following the Chief Judge's response to a letter from Sowore requesting the case to be assigned to another judge. Kehinde argued that the case had nothing to do with political activities and that the defendant's request for adjournment was an attempt to delay the proceedings. Abubakar, on the other hand, claimed that the Chief Judge's response directed the defendant to file a formal application, which could be heard in open court. However, after reviewing the letter, Justice Umar ruled that the defendant was not required to file an application and that the current stage of the case only required the defendant to enter his defence. The judge subsequently ordered that the hearing in the case proceed daily, starting from June 5, in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. The prosecution is alleging that Sowore made false claims against President Tinubu by calling him 'a criminal' in posts on his X and Facebook accounts. Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services. As the trial progresses, it remains to be seen how the defendant will proceed with his defence. The case has sparked significant interest, given the high-profile nature of the individuals involved and the alleged offences. Justice Umar's ruling has set the stage for the next phase of the trial, which is expected to be closely watched by the public and the media. The defendant's counsel has been directed to proceed with the defence, and the prosecution is ready to respond to any arguments presented. The trial is a significant test of the country's judicial system, particularly in relation to freedom of speech and the limits of political expression.
