Lagos Thugs Harass Comedian Brain Jotter in Latest Incident of Street Extortion

Renowned Nigerian comedian and content creator, Chukwuebuka Amuzie, popularly known as Brain Jotter, has spoken out after a distressing encounter with a group of suspected thugs in Lagos. The incident, which was shared on his official Instagram page, shows Brain Jotter being confronted by a group of men who allegedly demanded settlement before allowing him to pass. This incident is the latest in a string of complaints from entertainers, professionals, and residents about the activities of suspected area boys, also known as agberos, in different parts of Lagos. Just days ago, the younger sister of Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, Saltiana, also known as DJ Salt of Life, shared her own experience of being targeted by suspected area boys who damaged her car after mistaking her for the singer. Medical doctor Olusina Ajidahun, known as The Bearded Sina, and music video director ThankGod Omori, popularly called TG Omori, have also shared their own accounts of being extorted and threatened by street touts while carrying out their professional duties in the state. According to Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the state government has been working to arrest and dislodge street urchins across the state, but cash handouts from celebrities, influencers, and members of the public have been undermining these efforts by encouraging the touts to view the streets as a lucrative source of livelihood and breeding a sense of entitlement among them. Brain Jotter's experience has once again highlighted the challenges many face while navigating Lagos traffic, with motorists driving relatively expensive vehicles or those mistaken for celebrities being repeatedly targeted. The incident has sparked reactions from followers, with one user, #Daddy_Tweens, interpreting Brain Jotter's post as a reference to people in Lagos who behave like animals in the wildlife, specifically pointing to Southwest thugs. Another commenter, #emmakudos, blamed the government for enabling such behavior, stating that 'Monsters in Lagos like this have been enabled by the government.' The Lagos State government has been urged to take collective responsibility and cooperation from the public to build a safer and more orderly Lagos.
