The Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) has called upon the Federal Government to strengthen its efforts in regulating commodity prices. This appeal aims to safeguard consumers and ensure that citizens truly benefit from the recent reduction in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

During a press briefing in Abuja, the National Speaker of the Youth Assembly, Rt. Hon. Famuyibo Oluwasegun, voiced strong concerns regarding the persistent high cost of essential goods, even as petrol prices have fallen. He highlighted a troubling pattern: while prices for goods and services typically surge immediately following a fuel price hike, they rarely decrease when petrol becomes more affordable. Famuyibo described this trend as clear evidence of inadequate market oversight and enforcement mechanisms.

According to Famuyibo, this situation continues to impose significant financial strain on millions of Nigerians, despite the fact that lower transportation and production costs should naturally lead to reduced consumer prices. He pointed out that over the past six months, petrol prices have seen a considerable drop, moving from an average of ₦1,350–₦1,400 per litre down to approximately ₦1,090–₦1,120 per litre. Yet, he noted, the cost of food items and other vital commodities has largely remained static.

The National Speaker urged the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), along with state-level consumer protection agencies and other relevant regulatory bodies, to intensify their market surveillance. He emphasized the need for these agencies to enforce fair pricing practices and ensure that the reduced operational costs are directly reflected in what consumers pay for goods and services.

Famuyibo further elaborated that robust enforcement of commodity pricing regulations would help alleviate inflationary pressures, boost the purchasing power of Nigerians, foster economic growth, and enhance public trust in the nation's economic management strategies.

The Youth Assembly reiterated its unwavering dedication to advocating for policies that promote economic fairness, social well-being, and sustainable national development. Furthermore, YAN appealed to various stakeholders, including traders, manufacturers, and transport operators, to act responsibly by passing on the advantages of cheaper fuel to consumers through more affordable prices for their products and services.
